Nettles Island, just north of the Martin/St. Lucie line on Hutchinson Island, is an interesting enclave of snowbirds, native Floridians, newbie Floridians, wannabe Floridians and vacationers who found this place by luck and could never give it up. What began as a campground in the late 1960s has evolved into more than 40 acres of custom homes, mobile homes, manufactured homes, Key West-style homes, built on stilts and RVs.
There are 1,578 properties on Nettles Island, which is connected to A1A by the main road, Nettles Boulevard.
Amenities are outrageous; there are two swimming pools (one on the ocean), tennis courts, clubhouse, bocce ball, shuffleboard. There are more than 40 clubs — everything from the kayak club to the yacht club to the men’s club and the women’s club. Line dancing is a big deal. Residents are super proud of their recycling efforts and socializing is an important part of everyday life, especially during the winter. Volunteer work is also important.
Nettles Island operates as a condo with a homeowners board. Nettles Island also has a marina, which can accommodate boats with a deep-water draw.
